#INFLUENCERDRIVE: Annabel Schofield

We have been paying attention to Women in industries. You should, too.

So, this week: let me introduce ANNABEL SCHOFIELD.

Ms Schofield kindly sat down and agreed to collaborate on, amidst her busy schedule.

You are about to read about Annabel's inspirational journey: past, present and future. Beautiful, all of it!

Here. We. GO!..

1:

Plug your latest project(s). What are you up to and when can we see/hear about it etc?

I am in the pre-pre production stages of my first feature film as producer. It’s a script called Schwinn Varsity and I’ve been working on it since 2017. It’s a coming of age, road-trip comedy which will shoot early next year in Los Angeles. Hopefully will be completely finished by autumn 2023.

Set in the summer of 1977, this not-quite coming-of-age comedy centers on two 14-year-old boys who undertake an epic, two-day bicycle trek across suburban St. Louis, finding adventure and peril along the way. Their goal? A legendary motherlode of adult magazines in a dumpster on the other side of the city - the stuff that dreams are made of - particularly if you’re riding the post-pubescent wave and living in the barren pre-digital dark ages of the late ’70s.

The story loosely parallels the 1969 classic Easy Rider , in which characters played by Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda strike out on custom motorcycles in search of an idealized America that seems further and further out of reach. In Schwinn Varsity, Tom Curtin and Harvey Presnell strike out on bikes in search of, well, cheesy pornography.

I also have 8 other projects of various genres that I’ve been developing, so hopefully I’ll be making some of those next .

2:

Describe a typical day in your life. If there is one!

I get up very early, and most days go hiking at Lake Hollywood with my little dog, 'The Squiggler', before I do anything else. Then it’s generally zooms and meetings, but all this will change once we officially go into pre-production in the next month or so.

I find that the time I spend in nature keeps me sane, healthy and positive and has become an essential part of my lifestyle.

3:

What’s been the toughest challenge you have faced, to date? How did you endure/survive/grow from it?

There have been more than a few. Producing films is not for the faint of heart, but the hardest thing I’ve had to endure was watching my brilliant and elegant father slowly shrivel and die from cancer at the height of the pandemic.

The only positive is that the lockdown allowed me the time to be with him for the three months before he passed, which was heart-breaking but also a huge honor, to spend that precious time and to be able to properly say our goodbyes.

One learns how resilient they are, and how much you can endure in the face of unbearable pain and sadness. What have I learned? Honestly, the biggest takeaway is that doctors should not prescribe chemo to elderly people. Their bodies can’t handle it and the treatment makes their last days a living hell, painful and lacking in dignity.

4:

Contrast with: happiest time, ever? Or is the best yet to come?!

I rarely dwell on the past and find life to be full of ups and downs. But I truly feel that all the hard work I’ve put in over the last few years is finally paying off and that the future is very bright indeed.

All I want is to make great films, have fun, work with talented people and to travel everywhere on our beautiful planet while can.

5:

How do you relax? List some favourite books/tunes/films/exercises to help, if possible!

Being in nature and hiking are a huge help as are frequent massages and swimming when I get the chance. I also love yoga but rarely do it in LA as it’s so competitive and cultish here.

I listen to all kinds of music, I’m passionate about hearing what’s new but I love soul, blues, reggae, psychedelic rock and all kinds of dance music (except techno as it’s impossible to dance to! ) .

Favorite films:

  • Withnail & I
  • Blade Runner (original)
  • Apocalypse Now
  • Some Like It Hot
  • Moulin Rouge (anything by Baz Luhrman: recently I LOVED Elvis
  • Fantastic Mr Fox (most films by Wes Anderson)
  • Moonstruck,
  • Northern Soul is fantastic. I’m sure I’m forgetting many others, sorry film makers.

I’ve been trying to read more books lately, but I’m terrible at it now and I blame getting an e-reader for that. It’s just not the same as having a paper book in one’s hands and turning the pages oneself.

My favorite book used to be: The Master and Margarita, by Mikael Bulgakov and I adore Phillip Roth, Martin Amis, Tony Morrison and Ernest Hemingway although I guess that’s not very woke of me.

But you should all read my novel, The Cherry Alignment which is exclusively available digitally on Amazon. I’m pretty proud of it and I put years of work into it. It’s also very naughty and rather a lot of fun.

6:

What tech items can you not do without, and why? And what might be done, by tech /apps to improve life and work, in general, do you think?

My Iphone of course. I’m as addicted and reliant as any teenager. I still use my MacBook Pro from 2010 for a lot of my film production work, and my MacBook Air for everything else. Apart from that I’m completely addicted to Apple TV and streaming services but I like to call it research on my Tax Return. Thanks HBO Max, Hulu, Starz, Netflix, Amazon etc.

How can they improve? Provide better content, preferably produced by me! I also find social media, namely Facebook and Instagram to be  incredibly valuable tools to keep in contact with my many friends worldwide. I would not have been able to get through the isolation of the pandemic without them.

7: Who has influenced you the most on your journey, so far? And where do you, as an influencer yourself, see yourself in the next 5-10 years?

I’m an influencer? Egads! I had no idea.  I suppose my late father influenced me the most and gave me an enormous amount of experience, persistence and knowledge about filmmaking.

My first step-mother, (I had three)  Sally was a fashion model in the 1960s and she had a profound influence on my life as a young girl which also gave me the confidence to pursue modelling and acting, to some degree of success.

In the next 10 years I hope to have made several more great films and to be primarily living somewhere wonderful in Europe with a massive garden and a lot of animals with close friends visiting often. My idea of perfect happiness is a long lunch in a lush garden with lots of wine, great food and laughter.  And a dishwasher.
